Rockville’s outdoor ice skating rink opened with a bang Dec. 28.
Pyrotechnics lined the glassy surface in Rockville Town Square, bursting into colorful sprays of yellow, green, pink and orange. And carrying a small torch, Former Olympian Kimmie Meissner cut the ice in front of hundreds of onlookers.
Lauren Somerville, 12, of Cabin John assessed the outdoor rink plain and simple.
“It’s really awesome,” she said. A figure skater herself, Lauren met Meissner before the opening performance.
Federal Realty Investment Trust opened the 7,200-square-foot rink — the largest outdoor rink in Montgomery County — with the help of Tri-State Ice Management, an Annapolis-based ice rink management company.
Beyond public skating, rink amenities include birthday parties, corporate events, private parties and ice skating lessons.
“It took an entire village, really, to make this all happen,” said Robin McBride, of Federal Realty. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.”
U.S. National Champions in Juvenile Ice Dance Eliana Gropman, 10, and Ian Somerville (Lauren’s brother), 11, delighted the crowd with a couples skate after Meissner’s performance.
“It’s so exciting for him,” said Cathy Somerville, Ian’s mother. “It’s so out of the box.”
Like tiny adults, the two pre-teens swirled across the ice in well-versed unison.
After the final bow, the public lined up to test the ice.
