A Fort Washington man could be sentenced to more than two life terms in prison after he was found guilty Friday of first-degree murder for fatally shooting a Camp Springs man two years ago in the parking lot of a Temple Hills apartment complex, according to the Prince George’s County state’s attorney’s office.

Jose Ricardo Odom, 31, of the 2000 block of Belfast Drive in Fort Washington, will be sentenced Feb. 10 in Prince George’s Circuit Court for the Dec. 1, 2009, murder of Leland Derelle Hunt.

Shortly before midnight, prosecutors allege, Odom and an accomplice shot Hunt and stole his apartment keys in the parking lot of Oxon Terrace Apartments, located in the 2500 block of Southern Avenue in Temple Hills, to gain access to Hunt’s Camp Springs apartment about five miles away.

Prince George’s police found Hunt dead in the parking lot of the complex, shot at close range. Before the incident, Odom and the man killed were seen together on surveillance video at a liquor store, the state’s attorney’s office said.

Odom’s alleged accomplice, Kenneth Edward Morgan, 32, of the 2600 block of 32nd Street in southeast Washington, D.C., was also charged with first-degree murder and burglary, but prosecutors dropped the case against Morgan due to insufficient evidence, said Nancy Lineman, spokeswoman for the state’s attorney’s office.

Odom and Morgan allegedly stole electronics and clothing from Hunt’s apartment, and may have been looking for drugs, according to police. There was no evidence of forced entry.

In a surveillance video at Hunt’s apartment complex in Camp Springs, a white Mercedes enters the complex grounds and exits about 45 minutes later, according to the state’s attorney’s office. Prosecutors said Odom owns a white Mercedes and his license plate matched the one visible on the security video.

In addition to the first-degree murder conviction, Odom was found guilty of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, use of a handgun in commission of a crime of violence, robbery with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary.

Odom faces two consecutive life terms in prison in addition to 88 years, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

His attorney, Joseph L. Gibson Jr., whose office is based in Riverdale, did not immediately return a call for comment Monday afternoon. A phone number for Odom could not be located.

Lineman said the investigation into Morgan continues, but had no additional information on his case. She declined to comment on the specific reasons for the dropped charges.

A number for Morgan’s attorney, Arthur M. Reynolds Jr. in Riverdale, was not working.
