Hundreds of runners set record-breaking times for a 5k race Nov. 6 in Bethesda, marking such amazing finishing times as negative-43 minutes.
Runners turned back the clock by starting at 1:50 a.m., 10 minutes before Daylight Saving Time struck, allowing them to achieve the appearance of “negative time.” The event drew more than 500 runners to the Georgetown Square Shopping Center in Bethesda, who each paid $35 to be donated to two charities that support the families of wounded military members.
“It was a lot of fun, people were hootin’ and hollerin’ and just having a good time all night,” said Bethesda’s Bob Fleshner, the race’s organizer.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the national nonprofits Hope for the Warriors, which supports combat wounded service members and their families, as well as Team Red, White, & Blue, which tries to enrich the lives of veterans by providing them with household services and goods.
The race was one of nine held around the country during Daylight Saving Time, Fleshner said, all organized by the franchise Anytime Fitness.
