St. Elizabeth School in Rockville had nine student winners in the 2011 Conflict Resolution Bookmark Art Contest, sponsored by the Maryland Judiciary. Robert Frost Middle School in Rockville had one winner, as did Piney Brach Elementary School in Takoma Park.
Chief Judge Robert M. Bell, of the Maryland Court of Appeals, presented awards to the winners in Annapolis on Oct. 20.
The St. Elizabeth winners were second-graders Eve De Haven and Loren Zorc, fifth-graders Katie Kalhorn, Maddy Giuliani, Abbie Hennessy, Caroline Howley, Sara Miller, Victoria Murray and Rachel Russell.
Eighth-grader Dhruv Mehan was the winner from Frost and fourth-grader Thea Henry was the Piney Branch winner.
Students were awarded cash and some of the entries will be printed as bookmarks to promote conflict resolution in Maryland.
The theme for this year’s student artwork was resolving or preventing conflict.
“I love the bookmark competition as it opens the door to talk to the children about what peace, respect ... means for them in school,” Martine Reynolds, St. Elizabeth art teacher, wrote in an email. “I am always amazed with the ideas the children bring, and am very happy for [them] when they win because it boosts their confidence and rewards their hard work.”
