The Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition will host a free screening of its documentary “Stealing Trust” at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at Oxon Hill Library.
The 40-minute film follows the stories of 10 Maryland homeowners who were all victims of financial fraud by debt settlement agencies, mortgage lenders and home improvement contractors, and how regulation failed to protect them.
“We think the film is really a powerful consumer education piece and we want to try to get it to as many people around the state as possible,” said Franz Schneiderman, the coalition’s communications director.
Opening remarks will be provided by U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Dist. 4) of Fort Washington; Hank Greenberg, AARP Maryland director of advocacy; and Marceline White, executive director of the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition.
The screening is co-sponsored by Sen. Joanne Benson (D-Dist. 24), Del. Aisha Braveboy (D-Dist. 25), Prince George’s County Councilman Obie Patterson (D-Dist. 8), the county’s Department of Family Services and Advisory Committee on Aging, and the Psi Epsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
The library is at 6200 Oxon Hill Road. RSVP by emailing franz@marylandconsumers.org.
