Volunteers from Lowe’s Heroes partnered with the clients of a Lanham-based nonprofit organization to do landscaping work Sept. 15 at one of the organization’s 16 residential sites.
The group home in Bowie, where the volunteer day took place, is run by Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Prince George’s Mental Health Services. The organization’s clients are adults who suffer from chronic mental illnesses, said Tomeka Bolden, the senior program director.
About eight clients worked alongside 10 to 12 local Lowe’s employees to plant trees and bushes and spread mulch, Bolden said.
“It’s the opportunity for [the clients] to have a sense of accomplishment, a sense of belonging and knowing there are other people in the community who care for them,” she said. “It also gives them a sense of ownership.”
Lowe’s Heroes is a company-wide initiative that encourages employees to volunteer in their communities.
