Ÿ During September, the Laurel Museum will mount a small exhibit focused on 9/11 and offer visitors an opportunity to reflect on the day, the community’s connections to it and the aftermath 10 years after the event by adding to the museum’s 9/11 commemorative book. On the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, visitors are invited to come and read these comments and add their own reflections about 9/11, about America and our community 10 years after in the same volume. The museum is located at 817 Main St. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and Friday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free. Ÿ The Bowie Senior Center Labyrinth will be open at 11 a.m. Sept. 9 in memory of the lives sacrificed 10 years ago on Sept. 11. A solemn ceremony will be followed with a silent walking of the labyrinth, a meditative walking path. The Bowie Senior Center is located at 14900 Health Center Drive, Bowie. Call 301-809-2300.

Ÿ Prince George’s firefighters are preparing to honor the 343 firefighters killed on 9/11 with the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Sept. 11 at the Maryland Trade Center, 7500 Greenway Center Drive, Greenbelt. The stair climb is limited to firefighters; however, a three-mile walk/run will also be held Sept. 11 for the community and fire service members. The route is designed to equal 110 stories, the height of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. Onsite registration begins at 7 a.m., a ceremony of remembrance will be held at 8 a.m., and the firefighters’ 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and the walk/run will start at 9:05 a.m. at the Maryland Trade Center. There is a $25 registration fee. All proceeds will be donated to the National Fallen Firefighter’s Foundation. Ÿ A Walk of Remembrance will begin at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 11 and continue for 24 hours at the University of Maryland Memorial Chapel, 1101 Memorial Chapel, College Park. Approximately 3,000 students, faculty, staff and community members will continuously walk the labyrinth in the Chapel's Garden of Reflection and Remembrance. Ÿ The Freestate Happy Wanderers Volksmarching Club is sponsoring a 9/11 memorial walk on Sept. 11 at the Montpelier Mansion, 9650 Muirkirk Road, Laurel. Start between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., and finish by 4 p.m. There will be a 5Km, or 3.1 miles, and 10Km, or 6.2 miles trail. Ÿ Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist Church presents "Turning to Peace" at 10 a.m. Sept. 11 in the Meeting House at 3215 Powder Mill Road, Adelphi (between Riggs and Cherry Hill roads). The community is invited to come together to pause, remember and probe for meanings in the world as it has become since, and to affirm with story, music and dance humanity’s yearning for peace. Ÿ The Greenbelt American Legion Post 136 will hold a small ceremony at 11 a.m. Sept. 11 in observance of Sept. 11, 2001, in the banquet hall of the post, 6900 Greenbelt Road, Greenbelt. Ÿ An open house will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the American Legion Post 259, 9122 Piscataway Road, Clinton. All members, veterans and members of the community are invited to view footage of the day and discuss the events that unfolded on 9/11. Call 301-868-2550.

Ÿ A memorial tribute to the soldiers, police officers, firefighters and all Americans who lost their lives on 9/11 will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 at Cheverly Legion Park, 2800 block of Cheverly Avenue. Ÿ An Interfaith Prayers for Peace Service outside Bowie City Hall will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11. After the service, participants will walk from City Hall to Allen Pond Park for the Salute to America Concert. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature a U.S. Naval Academy Concert Band performance at the Robert V. Setera Amphitheater at Allen Pond Park, 3330 Northview Drive, Bowie. During the program, past and present members of the armed services will be honored, and the events of Sept. 11 will be remembered. Free. Call 301-809-3078.

Ÿ The U.S. Senate unanimously adopted a resolution establishing a national Moment of Remembrance at 1 p.m. Sept. 11 in memory of the lives that were lost 10 years ago. Communities across the nation are encouraged to recognize this moment by ringing bells and sounding sirens for a full minute.

Ÿ The University of Maryland, College Park, will commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with a performance of Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D Minor at 7:30 p.m. at Dekelboum Concert Hall, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, located at the intersection of Stadium Drive and Route 193 in College Park. This work, Mozart’s last before his death, summons momentous events of loss and remembrance of the departed. Event is free, but tickets required. Ÿ Holy Redeemer School will hold a memorial service during the usual morning prayer service at 8:15 am. Sept. 12 at the school, located at 4902 Berwyn Road in College Park. The Boy Scouts will lay a wreath at the bottom of the U.S. flag pole. A large number of service members, police and other first responders are expected to be in attendance. Ÿ From Sept. 8 through Oct. 2, the Columbia Art Center will host a commemoration art show in remembrance of 9/11 featuring the works from veterans in the American Legion Auxiliary Creative Arts Program. Thirty-nine pieces were selected by the director of the Washington Veterans Administration Medical Center. The center is located at 6100 Foreland Garth in Columbia Maryland. Ÿ The Newseum in Washington, D.C., will offer free admission to all visitors on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11 this year. The museum features numerous 9/11 artifacts, including a 31-foot section of the broadcast antenna from the north tower of the World Trade Center, a piece of limestone from the Pentagon and a piece of the fuselage of Flight 93. Tickets can be purchased online or at the museum on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11.

Ÿ A Day of Service sponsored by Catholic University of America will be held Sept. 10. Participants will meet at 8 a.m. Sept. 10 in the Great Room of the Edward J. Pryzbyla Center, located at 201 Pryzbyla Center, N.E., in Washington, D.C., and then travel to service sites by bus or Metro. A mass led by Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, archbishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of Washington, will be celebrated at noon Sept. 11 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in the Great Upper Church, located at 400 Michigan Ave., N.E., in Washington, D.C. The Basilica is also planning a moment of silence and will have the bells toll 10 times. A Unity Walk commemorating Sept. 11 will begin with an opening interfaith service and kick off at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Sikh National Gurdwara located at 3801 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., in Washington, D.C. Ÿ Sarah Skaggs Dance is launching a three-city public art project on Skaggs’ solo piece, “Dances for Airports,” choreographed right after 9/11. The project, “9/11 Dance: A Roving Memorial,” will be performed Sept. 11 at multiple locations in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pa. Ÿ The Washington National Cathedral joins the three sites most affected on Sept. 11 to present “A Call to Compassion.” The program will gather Americans to honor the memories of those who were lost, heal the wounds caused by terrorism and war, and gain new strength to move forward as a nation. All are invited from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 9, Sept. 10 and Sept. 11 at the cathedral, 3101 Wisconsin Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. The three days of events will culminate on Sept. 11, when the cathedral will toll its 12-ton funeral bell at the moments when airplanes struck the north and south towers of the World Trade Center, hit the Pentagon and crashed in Pennsylvania.
