About 1,500 people who had been evacuated from White Oak Towers in Silver Spring were allowed to return to the building at 7 a.m. today following a boiler room fire that disabled electricity to the entire building, according to Capt. Oscar Garcia, spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire Department.
The evacuation took place at about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, and residents who needed shelter were taken to Springbrook High School. Partial power was restored to the building at 4:15 a.m., and Montgomery County Fire Rescue lifted its fire watch as of 7 a.m., Garcia said. One person was taken to the hospital with a possibly unrelated minor medical emergency, but the person was also evaluated for smoke inhalation as a precaution, Garcia said.
