Bladensburg police continue the investigation of a fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon at the Gateway Gardens apartment complex.
Bladensburg officers responded at about 1 p.m. to a call for a shooting at the complex, at the 4200 block of 58th Avenue, and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, said Sgt. Charles Cowens of the Bladensburg police department.
“We actually got the call from the rental office, as he was located in the vicinity of the rental office,” Cowens said. “[A daytime shooting] is very unusual.”
The approximately 30-year-old man was transported to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries, Cowens said.
The victim’s name is being withheld until his next of kin have been notified, said Deputy Town Administrator Tim McNamara.
Cowens said the department has not previously had to respond to any major incidents at the complex.
“We get suspicious person calls, but nothing involving a shooting,” he said.
Calls to Southern Management Corp., which owns Gateway Gardens, were not immediately returned.
“It’s a well kept community and we don’t have a lot of issues with them,” McNamara said. “They do a magnanimous job of keeping the place nice and clean. They try to make it a nice community.”
There are no suspects or motive at this time, Cowens said.
McNamara said the shooting is the third homicide in Bladensburg in 2011.
Shawnta Lysheema Coleman, 33, of the 6400 block of Wilcox Court of Alexandria, Va. was found April 7 by Prince George’s County police at an apartment in the 5600 block of Emerson Street suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper body. Coleman was transported to an area hospital, where she died.
At about 10:35 p.m. April 8, county firefighters responded to 5400 block of Annapolis Road in Bladensburg for a report of a commercial fire and found store owner Richard Changsum Nam, 69, of the 10800 block of Lake Arbor Way in Mitchellville suffering from trauma to his body inconsistent with the fire, police said. Nam was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Ashley Dominique Owens, 23, of the 5700 block of 16th Avenue, was arrested June 30 and charged with second-degree murder, first-degree arson and armed robbery.
