The College Park Lions Club awarded eight one-year, $1,000 scholarships to high school students and three U.S. Savings Bonds to middle school students during the 2010-2011 school year.
The following high school seniors who graduated this spring received $1,000 scholarships: Khalil Pettus of Clinton, who graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville; Adnan Rashid of Greenbelt, who graduated from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt; Alexis Saunders of Hyattsville, who graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville; James Osho of Bowie and Hui Chen of Mount Rainier, both of whom graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville; Catherine Hamel of Bowie, who graduated from Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg; and Robert Bailey of Lanham and Yuleisi Davila-Hassiman of Hyattsville, both of whom graduated from Parkdale High School in Riverdale.
All students, except Hassiman, will attend the University of Maryland, College Park, this fall. Hassiman will attend Towson University.
Savings bonds were awarded to students for winning the competition at their schools by participating in the Lions International Peace Poster contest.
Clio Jensen of University Park, from Girl Scouts Unit 23-5 meeting at Holy Redeemer School in College Park, received a $100 savings bond; Gelin Alfaro of Hyattsville, from Bucklodge Middle School in Adelphi, and Iyiade Olatero-Olagbegi of Beltsville, from Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Beltsville, each received $50 savings bonds.
