Glenarden excels in Junior Olympics
More than 80 athletes from the Glenarden Track Club qualified for the National Junior Olympics, July 26-31in Wichita, Kan., with their performances at the Region III Championships July 7-10 in Hoschton, Ga.
First-place finishers for Glenarden included Christopher Walker of DeMatha High School, who won the young men’s 400 meters in 49.06 seconds. The young men’s 3,200 relay team of Thomas Gaither, Onyx Johnson, Omozokpia Olumese and Jeff Ajayi took first in 8 minutes, 3.21 seconds. Johnson also took second in the 800.
In the sub-bantam boys division, Laurenz Colbert, Therman Hawkins, Tareek Rankine and Phillip Rawlings won the 400 relay (59.66). Colbert also took fourth in the 100. Aniya Dubose, Leyah Hall-Robinson, Lauryn Harris and Cameron Hewitt set a meet record in the bantam girls 400 relay (54.96). Hall-Robinson, Harris, Naomi Omomah and Tamryn Thornton-Fillyaw teamed to win the bantam 1,600 relay (4:34.44). Thornton-Fillyaw was second in the bantam girls 1,500, and Harris took second in the 100.
Jonathan Parish (Fairmont Heights High) took second in the young men’s triple jump and was fifth in the long jump. Other second-place finishers in individual events included Florence James (intermediate girls shot put), Elizabeth Shodiya (youth girls long jump) and Alexis Stroman (young women’s 100 hurdles). Third-place finishers in individual events included Ayanna Johnson (midget girls 800), Fatima Ceesay (midget girls discus), David Stone (intermediate boys 400) and Malcolm Sykes (young men’s 400 hurdles).
Trinity Franklin took fourth in the bantam girls shot put. Fifth-place finishers included Taylor Dotson (youth girls high jump), Jeffrey Butler (youth boys discus), Joshua Thompson (sub-bantam boys javelin) and Dondre Echols (young men’s 110 hurdles).
Assault wins championship
The D.C. Assault Gold U-9 boys' basketball team won the U-10 Division 3 Classic championship in Hampton, Va., on July 4. The team lost its first two games in pool play, but then won five in a row, beating Next Level Sports, 31-19, in the championship game. The Assault forced 12 turnovers and outrebounded Next Level, 22-12, in the title game. The squad is now 25-10 playing against U-10 competition and will receive an automatic invitation to next year's U-11 national tournament. The Assault includes Delonnie Hunt, Chase Beasley, Mekhi Price, Marcus Gorham, Julius Ellerbe, Darius Miles, Mike Forbes, Canin Reynolds, Woody Newton, Manuel Kent and coaches Cole, Craig Brooks, Melissa Richmond, Brian Walker and Dave Miles.
West Arundel beats Northridge
The West Arundel Aqua-Ducks swim team finished its Prince-Mont League regular season schedule with a 318-260 win against the Northridge Neptunes last weekend. West Arundel will play host to the Division C Championships at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Michael Venit (8-and-under boys), Micah Norsworthy (9-10 boys), Colette Pierce (11-12 girls), Jay Venit (11-12 boys), Ryan Webb (13-14 boys) and Kellianne Venit (15-18 girls) each won three events. Kellianne Venit set team records in all three wins. Olivia Clark, Ally Webb, Jason Schneck, Andrea Sturgis, Peter Moyer and Andrea Moyer each won two events, and Billy Rodgers had one win.
Danielle Villeneue, Colette Pierce, Andria Moyer, and Ally McMahon set a team record in the girls’ medley relay. The Ducks won the 8-and-under relay (Maylyn Pacheco, Doug Holts, Olivia Clark, and Michael Venit) and the boys graduated relay (Micah Norsworthy, Jay Venit, Webb, and Rodgers).
Montpelier falls to Kingfish
The Montpelier swim team lost 323-246 to the Kingfish Swim Club on Saturday. Trey Beam (8-and-under boys) and Thomas Brown de Colstoun (11-12 boys) each won three events for Montpelier. Suzannah Mills, Dylan Buehler and Matt Derrick each won two events.
Russett tops Fort Washington
The Russett Sharks finished the Prince-Mont Swim League dual meet schedule with a 5-0 record after a 300 ½-269 ½ win against Fort Washington last weekend. The Sharks will travel to New Carrollton Recreation for the Division D Championships at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Lauren Ritter (11-12 girls), Allison Ritter (9-10 girls), Everett Butler (13-14 boys) and Taylor Hicks (15-18 girls) each won three events for Russett. Dominic Kazzi set a team record in the 8-and-under boys 25 breast stroke (27.31 seconds). Three relay teams also set team records: Erin Devine, Tomisin Sobande, Aaban Syed and Imaad Syed in the mixed 8-and-under 100 free relay (1 minute, 37.7 seconds); Madewa Adeyemo, Chris Marx, Everett Butler and Alex Cartron in the 9-18 boys’ 200 free relay (2:20.12); and Allison Ritter, Simone DeSouza, Paris Hicks and Taylor Hicks in the 9-18 girls 200 free relay (2:14.75).
Fort Washington’s Calvin Charles, Basem Magd, Arthur Walton and Joey Patrizio combined to set a pool record in the boys’ medley relay (2 minutes, 9.69 seconds). Alexandra Tompkins, D’Ante Jeffries, Walton, and Akeyla Holley each won three events. David King and Jared Saunders were double winners. Kiara Leath, Gaby Griffin, Marlena Fernandez and Magd each had one win.
