South Bowie wins championships
The South Bowie U-11 flag football team won the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Central Area and Regional flag football championships. South Bowie defeated Peppermill, 26-6, to win the Central Area title and defeated Vansville, the Northern Area Champion, 13-6 in the Regional championship game. The team went 8-0 with two shutout victories and outscored its opponents 222-43. The team includes Jordan Wilder, Wayne Bristol Jr., Warren Dixon II, Devan Hebron Jr., Darius Savoy, Kuron Anderson, James Belle Jr., Jaylen Belle, James Hood Jr., and Ethan Lacy and coaches Derek Savoy Sr., Wayne Bristol Sr., and James Belle Sr.
Cedar Heights teams win
The Cedar Heights Lions U-7 and U-9 football teams clinched berths in their respective championship games of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning flag football league with victories in the semifinals.
The U-7 team got touchdown runs from Cameron Bush, Isaiah Braithwaite and Abrion Sewell, and Mikale Fletcher caught an extra point pass in a 24-0 victory against Peppermill. Amari Winbush helped lead the Lions' defense. Cedar Heights will face Vansville in the championship game, a rematch of last year's final, which Cedar Heights won.
The U-9 team won its semifinal, 12-0, against Good Luck Community Center. Amari Sewell tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Knasir McDaniel and Jermaine Smith had a 23-yard touchdown run. McDaniel got his second interception of the game late in the second half to help seal the victory.
Fort Washington wins
The Fort Washington Sharks improved to 3-0 in the Prince-Mont Swim League with a 315-260 win against the Pointer Ridge Dolphins on Saturday. Fort Washington triple winners included Compton French, Madison Tompkins, D'Ante Jeffries, Akeyla Holley, Basem Magd and Gaby Griffin. Double winners were Kiara Leath, Alexandra Tompkins and Tamara Masciola. Single winners were David King, Arthur Walton, Nate Thomas, Jared Saunders, Kristian Spears and Michael Szymanski.
Russett beats Smallwood
The Russett Sharks earned a 299-278 victory against the Smallwood Village Marlins on Saturday in a Prince-Mont Swim League meet. Imaad Syed, Tomisin Sobande, Allison Ritter, Alex Cartron, Paris Hicks and Taylor Hicks each won three events for Russett. Cartron set team and pool records in the boys’ 15-18 50-meter backstroke (31.94 seconds), and he also set a team record in the 100 individual medley (1 minute, 11.75 seconds). Simone DeSouza and Alexandra Bowman each recorded two victories. The girls’ 9-18 200 free relay of Ritter, DeSouza, Paris Hicks and Taylor Hicks set a team record in 2:11.47.
West Arundel wins
The West Arundel Ducks set 11 team records and notched a 308-254 victory against Montpelier in a Prince-Mont Swim League meet on Saturday. Triple winners included Michael Venit, Micah Norsworthy, Colette Pierce, Andrea Sturgis and Kellianne Venit. Pierce set a team record in the 11-12 girls’ breaststroke, and Kellianne Venit set West Arundel marks in the 15-18 girls’ breaststroke, backstroke and individual medley. Olivia Clark and Billy Ridgers each won two events.
Jay Venit set a new 11-12 boys’ team record as he won the breaststroke. Peter Moyer and Ryan Webb won the 13-14 boys’ breaststroke and backstroke, respectively. Moyer set new records in the breaststroke and freestyle. Webb wet new marks in the backstroke, butterfly and individual medley. Alexis Welsh and Cecilia Rameriz also earned wins for West Arundel.
The girls’ medley relay team of Danielle Villeneuve, Pierce, Andrea Moyer and Ally McMahon set a new team record. The 8-and-under girls’ relay team of Maylyn Pacheco, Doug Holts, Olivia Clark and Michael Venit and the girls’ free relay team of Brianna Gmeinwieser, Ally Webb, Andrea Sturgis and Kellianne Venit also earned victories.
Registrations/tryouts
The Greater Laurel United Soccer Club is holding registration for ages 4 to 16 and also seeks volunteer coaches. Teams practice once or twice a week.
