The final Teen Escape Club Youth Cafe with a celebratory carnival theme is set for 6:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at the East County Community Center, 3310 Gateshead Manor Way in Briggs Chaney.

The idea for the youth cafe dates back to 2009, when members of a youth advisory group founded by Councilmember Nancy Navarro (D-Dist. 4) envisioned a positive environment where teens could meet. The first cafe, facilitated by the Department of Recreation, took place in April.

Friday marks the last night of the pilot program for this fiscal year, though Navarro helped secure $15,000 for the Department of Recreation to continue the program in fiscal 2012.

The carnival youth cafe will feature games, raffles and teen performances. Local sports teams and nonprofits will sell carnival concessions. The club will be open to rising 9th graders from East County middle schools as well as high schoolers, and admission is free.
