Boys Swimmer of the Year: Ethan Smith, DeMatha

Senior was strong in 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 1.67 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (54.76) and part of 200 IM and 400 free relay teams that made the A finals at Washington Metropolitan Swim Championships. Younger brother of Alex Smith, Gazette-Star Swimmer of the Year in 2007 and 2008.

Girls Swimmer of the Year: Amanda Barber, McNamara

Senior capped her high school career by taking sixth place in the 50-yard freestyle (24.57 seconds) and eighth in 100 free (56.53) at Washington Metropolitan Swim Championships. She was the only swimmer - male or female - to qualify for two A finals at Metros.

Coach of the Year: Paul Sweet, Fairmont Heights

Stepping down after 15 seasons, Sweet guided county's only state champion (Danielle Jackson). His boys' team was tops among 3A/2A/1A League squads at the county championships, while the girls' were second.

Boys First Team

Robert Bailey, Parkdale

Senior won county and region titles in the 50 freestyle and finished fourth in 50 free and 100 free at the state meet.

Alejandro Chavez, DeMatha

Senior was 17th at Metros in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.54) and was part of seventh-place 200 medley relay.

Daniel Chavez, Roosevelt

Sophomore won county title in 100 breaststroke and 500 free, the region title in the 100 butterfly and finished third in 100 fly at the state meet.

Lee Friedman, Roosevelt

Junior won county and region titles in 100 freestyle and 200 free and recorded top-10 finishes in both events at 4A/3A state meet.

Trevor Irish, DeMatha

Junior just missed spot in A final of the 200 free (1:44.87) at Metros, and swam opening leg of 200 free relay, which took fourth at Metros (1:28.73).

Steven Rigby, Bowie

Sophomore won county and region titles in the 100 backstroke and was fourth at the state meet. Also won region title in 200 IM.

Dennis Witol, Roosevelt

Sophomore won county title in the 200 IM, and took second at 4A/3A Central Region meet and fourth in state meet.

Girls First Team

Emily Boluda, Roosevelt

Sophomore won 500 freestyle at county and regional championships and was eighth in that event at the state meet.

Jennifer Clune, Roosevelt

Freshman won the 100 breaststroke at the county championships, then took second at the 4A/3A Central Region meet and third at the state meet.

Junior won county title in 100 butterfly and region title in the 100 breaststroke, and was fourth in 100 breast at state meet.

Danielle Jackson, Fairmont Heights

Senior captured 2A/1A state and Central Region titles in the 100 breaststroke, and was county champ in 50 free.

Courtney Like-Mathews, Roosevelt

Junior was county's only female swimmer to win two events at county and regional meets (200 IM and 100 backstroke).

Emma Luigard, Seton

Junior went 1:03.58 in 100 butterfly at Metros, which would have been the winning time in the county championships.
