The Maryland General Assembly created Frederick County government in 1748. The county is governed by five commissioners, each elected at-large to a four-year term. . The president of the Frederick County Board of Commissioners sets the agendas and runs the meetings. Beginning in 2014, a voter-approved charter form of government will take effect, with a county executive and a seven-member county council, five of whom will be elected by district and two at-large. All will serve four-year terms.
The board generally meets on Thursdays.
