A former Army brat, I moved from North Carolina in 1989 to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. By the time I graduated four years later with a degree in communications, I had several reporting internships under my belt and had fallen in love with community journalism. A post-graduation internship at the National Journal, a publication focused on politics and policy, allowed me to do research and reporting on national affairs and witness how world events factor into our everyday lives. I also did editing at a trade newsletter and Air Force Times before landing at The Gazette in 1998. During my time overseeing Prince George’s County’s newspapers, we have won numerous awards from the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association and Suburban Newspapers of America — but the honors from the community have been among the most meaningful to me, such as being recognized by the Southern Prince George’s Business and Professional Women organization and the Women’s Action Coalition of Prince George’s County. As editor, I work with reporters, edit stories, manage the office and, most importantly, get to share the wealth of interesting stories and unique perspectives in Prince George’s County.
