From the time I began writing for my high school newspaper at DuVal, I knew that I wanted to become a sportswriter. In 1987 I began freelance writing for a number of publications in Prince George’s County, the Prince George’s Journal, the Bowie Blade-News and the Prince George’s Sentinel, covering every sport at all levels. Gradually I added other publications to the mix and before long I spent more time writing articles on a freelance basis than I did working full-time. On any given weekend during the 1990’s I would file stories for newspapers in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia, as well as magazines. On Feb. 1, 1999, I began covering sports on a full-time basis for The Gazette in Prince George's County and remained on the staff until late January 2012. During my first stint with The Gazette I covered hundreds of games and thousands of athletes and was frequently asked to be a guest on area radio and television shows to discuss sports in the county. After two years with the Bowie Blade-News, I returned to the Gazette in February 2014 covering sports in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. Since 1995 I have been president of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association and since January 2012 I have also been president of the Maryland Racing Media Association. In 2002, through my affiliation with The Gazette, I was on the Prince George’s County Athletic Hall of Fame committee and last year I was a member of a committee that selected the inaugural Maryland-bred Hall of Fame class for thoroughbreds.
