Deputy managing editor

The Gazette, the suburban Washington, D.C., publisher of community newspapers, online sites and a Maryland politics and business weekly, is looking for a seasoned editor to lead weekly publications, help coordinate daily Internet coverage and participate as a member of our senior editorial team.

The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of progressive newsroom management experience, solid planning skills, proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be a mentor and coach for reporters and assistant editors. A background in business, technology, legal and political news is needed. This editor also participates in staff hiring and evaluation and represents the company, on occasion, at professional and community events.

This editor supervises two editors, a capital bureau chief, six reporters and is expected to do front-line editing on breaking news stories, in-depth enterprise and investigative stories and visual materials, including photos, graphics and video. Major responsibilities involve producing a weekly section of regional community news and a Friday broadsheet newspaper that focuses on politics, policy, business and technology. The editor works with the copy desk chief, photo editor and Internet editor to coordinate print packages and multimedia elements, and is a liaison with editors for more than a dozen publications in our community news group.

Familiarity with desktop publishing software such as QuarkXPress or InDesign, content management systems and web-based publishing systems is desired. While this position is based in the Gaithersburg, Md., headquarters, this editor will work on occasion in newsrooms in Laurel and Frederick, Md.

Assistant Sports Editor

The Gazette, a group of weekly community newspapers, is seeking an assistant sports editor for our Prince George's County office in Laurel, Md.

We publish eight zoned print editions a week, and we're looking for a creative thinker as we prepare to expand our Web presence with a daily online package. Duties will include a mix of editing, page layout, writing and managing staffers and freelancers. Our five-person sports staff primarily covers a group of 30 high schools with an emphasis on enterprise stories, off-the-field news and vibrant game coverage. The right person will be able to write and edit tightly and generate story ideas. Previous editing experience is preferred. QuarkXpress experience, reliable transportation and evening/weekend work are required.

Sports news correspondents
Part-time

The Gazette is expanding its coverage of sports on Gazette.Net, its award-winning web site, and seeks part-time correspondents to gather game scores and highlights on evenings and weekends. Job duties including reporting and writing, appending news briefs and filing material under deadline pressure. Excellent telephone interviewing skills are necessary, as is a track record demonstrating a high degree of accuracy and the ability to work independently.

This is a perfect opportunity for journalism students, especially those following a sports-track, or others who have an interest in writing and reporting community sports news and features, such as high school football, soccer, field hockey, wrestling and cross-country.

Correspondents will work with editors in our offices in Gaithersburg, Laurel and Frederick, Md. Most shifts are approximately 7 p.m. to midnight Fridays and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays during the fall sports season. The ability to telework from a remote site is possible based on schedules and staffing needs, but correspondents working from home must have their own computer and high-speed Internet connection.

Web Editor

The Gazette, publisher of award-winning community weekly newspapers in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, is expanding its online coverage. We are seeking a web editor/designer for primarily weekend and evening posting duties.

Main responsibilities include copy editing, arranging and uploading stories and multimedia on multiple pages, some light coding and rewriting headlines. On occasion, this editor will help report and write breaking news stories and edit still and video images to accompany stories.

Applicants must have a track record that demonstrates the ability to work independently under deadline pressure, and have proficiency with Quark, basic HTML and Photoshop. A working knowledge of Flash, RSS and other web technology is a plus. Must be able to cover non-traditional hours and adjust schedule to meet demands of shifting news cycles.

Staff Writer/Reporter, Kensington

The Gazette, publisher of award-winning community weeklies in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, has an opening for a general assignment reporter on its Bethesda desk. Duties include covering news events, meetings and writing features in and around the community of Kensington, as well as filling in as needed on other beats in the Bethesda area. Some evening and weekend assignments are to be expected. Community beats are a good opportunity for someone new to the business to gain experience covering hard news, government issues and features.

In addition to filing for our weekly editions, reporters contribute to daily updates on the Gazette.net website and training will start for a next generation of �mobile journalism,� including multimedia packages.

Applicants should have excellent writing and reporting skills and enjoy uncovering compelling stories. Experience writing for a newspaper preferred. Must have transportation.
